"Helping Others Communicate"

"YOUR CALL!"

4/29/2023

You gotta love it!  I know I did.  I refer to the recent headline on www.Newswer.com that read This Town's Little League Has ‘Ingenious’ Plan for Unruly Parents:  In Deptford, New Jersey, Abusive Spectators Will Have to Take On Umpire Duties or Be Banned.  The article, posted on April 28, 2023, admonishes its readers to think twice before yelling at the local Little League baseball umpire.

The writer, Jenn Gidman, writes:

“If you've ever attended a children's sporting event, you've likely witnessed a select few parents who get a little too much into the game, becoming agitated from the sidelines and even berating the refs or umpires. One New Jersey town has come up with a solution for that, and it's one that Good Morning America calls ‘ingenious.’ Now, unruly spectators who get confrontational with the umps at Little League games in Deptford Township will have to volunteer as umpires themselves for at least three games.”

She continues by quoting Brian Barlow, who founded the Offside Facebook page to “shame bad parents” and shine a light on how umping and refereeing aren't as easy as they seem:  “People are very comfortable making officials uncomfortable, so it's about time that we've reversed the trend and started making people uncomfortable who are harassing officials.”

It seems that the new rule in Deptford came about after two volunteer Little League umpires recently quit within one week's time.  Local news stations reports that the bad behavior is happening at local youth football and soccer games as well.  According to Don Bozzuffi, head of Deptford's Little League: “They're coming here, they're being abused, they don't need that.”

He further notes that, sometimes, the police even have had to be called.   And that is why volunteer umpires are now simply walking away.  That is also why, now, if a baseball game attendee in Deptford gets up in the ump's face or otherwise violates the code of conduct, they will have to put in their own three games as an umpire before they are allowed back as a spectator.

And the rule is ironclad.  Per NJ.com, “If the loose cannon refuses, they'll be banned for a year from all of the town's youth sporting events.”  The article concludes by quoting Bozzuffi as saying:  “We need you to come and see for yourself how difficult it is out there!”

As I read this, I could not help but reflect on the number of times I have personally witnessed what might appropriately be termed as inappropriate parental behavior.  I can only hope that others cannot say that about me what I can now say about others here!

But even if one has never attended a Little League baseball game, let alone yelled at a Little League umpire, the article is still convicting.  I say this because I believe it speaks to a deeper, broader human propensity:  that of judging others, and in the process, inadvertently inviting the judgment of yet others upon oneself!

Jesus warned against this in the New Testament Gospel of Matthew (chapter 7, verse 2, NIV), when He said to us:  “For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”  The New Living Translation of this verse reads:  “For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.”

And so, my friends, to judge or not to judge.  It’s your call!  Just be careful if you freely dispense your pronouncements upon others.  Because, if you do, you might just find yourself being freely dispensed upon!

HEART-FELT REMINDER!

4/25/2023

Since my retirement from full-time Pastoral Ministry a few years ago, I have had the privilege of serving several churches in the role of Interim Pastor.  Not long ago, after finishing my Sunday morning message in just such a capacity, a lady gave me a picture along with an accompanying document she had typed up titled “OUR MIRACLE HEART”.

With her permission, I share them here…

First the picture…  On the left is the picture as she delivered it to me.  On the right is the same picture, only rotated and cropped to emphasize the subject at hand.
And now, her verbatim explanation …

I’d like to share the blessing I received on February 27, 2020.  It was the day after my 77th birthday and although I had had cards, calls, and flowers from my family and friends I was feeling a little blue.  Cleat was 77 when he passed in 2015 and I missed him.  That cold and frosty morning seemed just like any other, til Geary called me to look out the bathroom window, there on the roof of my carport, was this Beautiful Heart.  I felt like I had just received a Big Hug from Cleat.

I was on the way to church to help set up for our Second Harvest food distribution on Saturday.  So I told everyone about Heart and showed them the picture on Geary’s I-pad.

Little did I suspect the Blessing that God sent me that day, and the strength I would receive from that Heart, in the days to follow.

On February 29th we had just returned home from a birthday dinner with my grand-daughter and husband.  As we approached the house, Pastor Matt Reed was just leaving, he came back and gave me the bad news.  As we were talking, I got a call from my daughter Shelly, she was crying as she told me that her husband Brad had died in a tragic accident at home, when a tree he was cutting fell on him.  She had lost her husband, I had lost my wonderful son-in-law!  I looked out at the roof and the Heart was still there.

March 2nd the big tornado hit Nashville, and by Monday morning, as we were getting ready to leave for N.C. the winds and rain hit us hard.  We waited until almost noon, as the storm passed we left and followed it all the way to Asheville.  The Heart was still on the roof, reminding that God was watching over us.  We were gone 3 days and when we arrive home late on Thursday, the Heart was still there.  It stayed on the roof for a month, during many spring storms, it was always there comforting us.  Then one morning the end of March we got up and looked out as we always did, and it had silently slid into the gutter.

“GOD IS SO GOOD” He is always there, even before we know we need him!!

For my part, I was touched – both by the picture she shared and by her accompanying written testimony.  Most likely, you were as well.  After all, who among us had not had a succession of difficult circumstances with which we have had to deal?

I know I have.  If you have as well, then do not despair.  Our Lord Himself once told us (in the New Testament Gospel of John, chapter 16, verse 33) that “In the world ye shall have tribulation”.  Modern English translations word this as: “here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows”.

For my part, I have heard this verse cited many times.  Maybe you have as well.  But it is worth taking the time to quote the whole verse and not just part of it.  In its entirety, John 16:33 reads:  “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

Did you catch it?  Jesus’ exact words were “Take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

Clearly, the precious lady who shared the above testimony with me was reminded by our Lord to “take heart” in the midst of “many trials and sorrows”.  And through her testimony, I too have been reminded to do the same thing.  I trust you have been as well.

More to the point, I trust that, whatever you may be facing, the Lord will bring to your mind the picture you have now seen above.  For ensconced in that heart is a powerful symbol - of God’s love, God’s presence, and God’s strength, no matter what you may be called upon to face or endure!

WERE YOU THERE?!

4/21/2023

You gotta love grandchildren!  My wife and I certainly do.  One thing we especially love about them is that we never know just what they will do or say next!  The youngest of the seven grandsons God has given us is all of age 2, and is now walking and talking.  His favorite words are “No!”, “Mine!”, and “Goose!”

Being the caboose, what lies behind the first two terms is obvious.  What lies behind the third is that I love to pick at him and call him a “Silly Goose”. Plainly, he is giving it right back to me!

His older brother is soon to be four, and is clearly destined to be a prosecutor.  He may well already hold the Guinness World Record for how many times a three year old has asked “Why?” in a single day!  Seriously, he can drive you crazy with his insufferable inquiries.  One gets the distinct impression that he is not so much focused on hearing whatever answer you provide as he is on formulating his next question to fire at you!

Recently, his mother asked him why he asked so many questions.  His immediate and forthright reply was:  “Because I don’t know things; and I want to learn them!”  Ever since then, we have been a little more tolerant of his relentless interrogations.

A few days ago, the Inquisitor (my nickname for him) asked my wife:  “Yaya (his name for her), are you old?”  Caught totally off guard, it was a moment before she could articulate a response.  Not so for the Inquisitor, who peppered her with his follow-up question…  “Yaya, why are you so old?!”

She came home in tears.  Not because he thought she was old; but because she was laughing so hard that she cried!  Now, to be sure, my wife and I have both ridden this old earth around the sun for a number of years.  I will not tell you exactly how many, other than to say that we technically qualify for Social Security in the very near future.  So I guess we do seem ancient to little ones who have not yet entered the first grade.

The eldest of our seven grandsons will do just that in the fall of the year.  As a kindergartener, he is beyond the “plethora of questions” stage.  These days, when he asked questions, he is quite serious about the matter.  All of which brings me to my point…

When our family had our Easter gathering a few weeks ago, I kicked the whole affair off with a short devotion.  As I did, I used the following picture to explain the meaning of Easter to our grandsons.
Picture
Obviously, it connected with the aforementioned eldest grandson.  Earlier this week, he asked my wife:  “Yaya, were you actually there and saw Jesus’ hands?”  Taken aback, she gathered herself and told him that she had not actually been present to see Jesus’ physically nail-scarred hands.  Not missing a beat, he asked:  “That little girl in the picture…  Is that my Mama when she was a little girl?”

When my wife came home and related this conversation, she was again in tears.  Only this time, it was not from laughing, but rather from crying over the genuine sincerity with which my grandson had asked her these questions.  Together, we reflected on the words of Jesus when He told us (in Matthew 19:14) that the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who become as little children, accepting things in simple, child-like faith.

To this assertion, He added the following admonition (in Mark 10:15, Contemporary English Version):  “I promise you that you cannot get into God's kingdom, unless you accept it the way a little child does!”

Little wonder then that He also said (in Matthew 18:3, CEV):  “I promise you this. If you don't change and become like a child, you (yourself) will never get into the kingdom of heaven.”

Was my wife actually there?  Was she there when they crucified our Lord?  Was she there when they nailed Him to a tree?  No, she wasn’t.  But, in fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy (chapter 11, verse 6), she was there when a little child led the way and underscored for her (and then me) the significance of accepting these things in simple, childlike faith!

My strong suspicion is that the first of my seven grandsons is not far from the Kingdom of Heaven!  I hope the other six will soon follow in his footsteps; and that even though they, like us, were not actually present when they crucified our Lord, they will nonetheless make their way to Calvary one day.  Moreover, having been there, I hope their testimony will one day be the same as that of the hymn writer of old, who said…

Years I spent in vanity and pride,
Caring not my Lord was crucified,
Knowing not it was for me He died
On Calvary.

Refrain:
Mercy there was great, and grace was free;
Pardon there was multiplied to me;
There my burdened soul found liberty
At Calvary.

By God’s Word at last my sin I learned;
Then I trembled at the law I’d spurned,
Till my guilty soul imploring turned
To Calvary.

Now I’ve giv’n to Jesus everything,
Now I gladly own Him as my King,
Now my raptured soul can only sing
Of Calvary!

Oh, the love that drew salvation’s plan!
Oh, the grace that brought it down to man!
Oh, the mighty gulf that God did span
At Calvary!

“I’LL BE BACK!”

4/16/2023

I have a shortcut on my laptop labeled “Good News”.  Trust me when I say that, in a world replete with bad news, it is a welcome respite which I choose to peruse daily.  And with good reason, for it contains a plethora of stories that relate uplifting and inspiring stories from the everyday world.  I recently came across one such story there which I would like to highlight today.

It was a Fox News piece written by Matteo Cina and titled: “Texas Teen Dies Rock Climbing, Two Hours Later He Revives: ‘Literal Miracle’:  The Teen's Doctor Describes Not Only Reviving, But Doing So With Such Little Damage, As A ‘Literal Miracle’”.  It contained the story of Sammy Berko, who seems to have died and then come back to life!

According to the article, Houston's Fox 26 quotes Jennifer Berko, Sammy's mother, as saying that Sammy “climbed to the top of (a rock-climbing wall), rang the bell, as we were told, and then his body went limp, and it looked like he was either playing around or passed out. They weren't quite sure and when they realized he was unresponsive, they lowered him slowly…”

The article further states that paramedics and doctors proceeded to administer CPR for two hours before informing Jennifer that, “He's, gone.”  She and her husband, Craig, sat with their son for a few minutes to say their goodbyes. “I started talking to him, just telling him how much I love him and sorry that we didn't know how to save him. Suddenly, as I started praying, my husband said, ‘Oh my gosh, he's moving.’”

Not surprisingly, the couple shouted for the medical team, who raced back in and began administering aid.  Naturally, due to how long Sammy went without oxygen, there was concern that he might have suffered some sort of major brain injury. Surprisingly, however, aside from some minor physical injuries, he has so far only experienced short term memory loss as a result of the whole ordeal.

The above article was published on April 16, 2023.  Yet, the Berko family’s actual ordeal unfolded a few weeks earlier.  These two dates together serve as a pair of parentheses bracketing Easter!  Why is this significant?  Because Easter commemorates the death of another Son Who also proceeded to come back to life!

On Good Friday, God’s One and Only Son, Jesus Christ, climbed to the top of a rocky outcrop called Golgotha; and there He rang the bell of victory over sin!  Immediately thereafter, He succumbed to death on an old rugged cross!  Not surprisingly, all who knew and loved Him gathered to mourn His passing.  Until their grief was suddenly and surprisingly cut short, that is, by the discovery that the One they mourned was in fact alive once again!

For my part, I am thrilled to know that Sammy Berko is once again alive and well!  I join with his parents in hoping that what his physician, Dr. Stacey Hall, in another article, will indeed come to pass:  “Sammy is going to have a great life and do wonderful things in this world!”

I also hope that all who read this will also consider that God’s Son, Jesus Christ, did also go on to have a wonderful life and do great things in this world!  One of the great things He did was the miracle of grace He undertook and performed in my life.  Another is the one He desires to do in your life!  If you have not done so already, I hope you will embrace Him and allow Him to do that in your life as well!  For in so doing, He will make possible for you, too, to overcome death with life.

Remember, as the Bible tells us (in the New Testament Gospel of John, chapter 8, verse 36), whomsoever the Son sets free will be free indeed!  That freedom even includes liberty over death!

LASTLY…

My title for this post obviously comes from a famous line once uttered by a movie character who “terminated” all those who stood in his way.  For what it’s worth… In that series of movies, another character, whose initials are, ironically, J.C., was born of an unmarried woman and an obscure father, then came of age, and eventually took on a worldly system designed to annihilate all of humankind!  In the end, empowered and assisted by a force that was far beyond mortal strength, he wound up victorious over the evil he faced.  (He who has eyes to see, let him see!)

HELPING HANDS…

4/11/2023

Back in the day, Holly Dunn received a Grammy nomination for her hit song titled “Daddy's Hands”.  The lyrics are quite evocative…

I remember daddy’s hands
Folded silently in prayer
And reaching out to hold me when I had a nightmare
You could read quite a story in the calluses and lines
Years of work and worry had left their mark behind

I remember daddy's hands
How they held my momma tight
And patted my back for something done right
There are things that I've forgotten that I loved about the man
But I'll always remember the love in daddy's hands

I remember daddy's hands working till they bled
Sacrificed unselfishly just to keep us all fed
If I could do things over
I'd live my life again
And never take for granted the love in daddy's hands

Daddy's hands
Were soft and kind when I was crying
Daddy's hands
Were hard as steel when I'd done wrong
Daddy's hands
Weren't always gentle but I've come to understand
There was always love in daddy's hands

I share these verses here because they have particular relevance to my family’s present situation.  It has often been said, “Like father, like son!”  In this case, it’s more akin to “Like father, like daughter!”  I write here in reference to my wife, who is an only child, and who was also the apple of her father’s eye.

Of course, he passed away recently, and is now in Heaven, enjoying his eternal reward.  For her part, my wife now carries on his legacy in this world each and every day as she lives out her life in ways that honor him.

Like the man in the song, my father-in-law spent his life in service of others.  Having lost his own father when he was but a boy, he literally went to work and spent his whole life thereafter providing for others - from a mother and ten siblings to a wife and a daughter; to a wife, daughter, and son-in-law; to a wife, daughter, son-in-law and three grandchildren; to a wife, daughter, son-in-law, three grandchildren, their respective spouses, and seven great grandchildren!  Like the man in the song, all the man ever did was sacrifice and give of himself to others!

But also like the man in the song, all of this took unfortunately its toll on his body - especially his hands.  On multiple occasions, he had to undergo carpal tunnel syndrome surgery acquired in most part from repetitive motion undertaken hundreds of times daily as a result of tightening bolts on passing cars on an assembly line at Ford Motor Company.  In spite of multiple procedures to alleviate his pain, he still spent the last few years of his life with severe numbness and a lack of dexterity in his hands and fingers.

Imagine how alarmed my wife was, therefore, when she began to experience numbness in her own hands a few years ago.  At first, it came and went.  But with the passage of time, it became more frequent, and more painful.  The result was her own diagnosis with carpal tunnel syndrome, which resulted in her own surgery this past week.

As her husband who loves here dearly, I hurt for her.  So, I was glad to see the surgery unfold.  But more than just sit back and allow the doctors and nurses to affect her healing, I was compelled to get involved personally.  To be sure, I am no physician.  As a result, I can neither perform surgery nor prescribe medicine.  But I can be there for her and support her though this ordeal.  She would doubtless do the same for me.

The problem is that even though she is on the road to relief, she cannot use her hands for a couple of weeks.  But I can offer her my hands in place of hers.  That is to say that what she cannot grip, I can grip on her behalf.  What she cannot hold, I can hold on her behalf.  What she cannot lift, I can lift on her behalf.  In short, my hands can make it possible for her to still “hand”le most anything she could not otherwise “hand”le during this critical time.

A plethora of other artists have had another hit song down through the years revolving around a simple question and answer: That question is:  “Wouldn’t you give your hand to a friend?”  And the answer is: “Think of me as a friend!”

In his New Testament Letter to the Romans (chapter 15, verse 1), the Apostle Paul admonished those of us who are strong to assist those who are weak and without strength.  Later, in his New Testament Letter to the Galatians (chapter 6, verse 2), he tells us why this matters.

We are to “Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”  The Contemporary English Version translates this verse to read:  “You obey the law of Christ when you offer each other a helping hand.”

As a devoted husband, my job is to love and care for my wife.  Clearly, that means offering her a helping hand. This I will gladly do.  As a follower of Jesus Christ, I am also called to love others and serve them.  This I will also gladly do.  For when I offer them a helping hand, I fulfill the desire of Christ for me as His follower.
Will you gladly do all this?  I hope so.  For remember, whenever we do, in the process, our hands then become a reflection of our daddy’s hands!  And this includes not just those of our earthly fathers, but of our Heavenly Father as well – the Very One Whom the Bible repeatedly tells us we can refer to as “Abba” (or Daddy) and not just Father!

GOOD STUFF!

4/7/2023

It’s been a good day - a really good day - a really, really good, good day!  And how fitting, as this is Good Friday.  I got up early, had my time of reflection,  had a hearty breakfast, went and exercised, then took a walk, all before coming back home and cleaning up for the day.  I then knocked out a myriad of small projects before feasting on several pieces of my wife’s world famous “Cheez-It Chicken” for lunch.

I followed this up with a short power nap before our three children, their respective spouses, and their sons (and our seven grandsons, each under the age of six) all showed up for a joyous afternoon and evening of festivity.  There are sixteen in our immediate family these days; and a quarter of these celebrate their birthdays in April.

Hence, our entire clan gathered for a combination feast, birthday party (complete with cake, cupcakes, and ice cream, and presents), and an enormous egg-hunt.  A great amount of fun was had by all as we celebrated life and the Lord’s blessings upon us!

I say entire clan; but sadly, one of us was missing:  my father-in-law.  After a long, full life of 90 plus years, he passed on to glory  barely a month ago.  In fact, this is the first time our entire family has gathered since his funeral.  Suffice it to say that his absence was noticeable.  More than one person commented on his empty chair as well as his missing persona.  Still, we managed to hold our grief in check, choosing not to focus so much on our loss, but rather on his gain.

Besides, it was on another Good Friday, nearly 2000 years ago, that another family of believers faced the death of one they too loved dearly.  And while that was a tough day for them, their grief was also short-lived.  For barely three days later, on that very first Easter Sunday, their focus manifestly shifted away from death and toward life.  This happened because the one they thought they had lost was suddenly found to them once again.  In the process, their loss turned into their gain!

While we sorely miss one we loved so dearly, we know that our loss is his gain.  What is more, we know that he yet lives; and that one day, we too shall be reunited with him and live as fully even as he now lives.

So yes, on this Good Friday, it’s been a really good day for my family and me.  This has been made all the more true by the fact that this Good Friday will also be followed by Easter Sunday.  For Fridays may involve a little grief; but Sundays always involve a lot of joy!  And that always puts whatever sadness one may face as a result of separation and sorrow into its proper perspective!

To quote the Apostle Paul:  “Where, O death, is your victory?  Where, O death, is your sting?”  The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.  But thanks be to God!  He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!”

Trust me... That's good stuff!

SCRIPTURE:  https://biblehub.com/niv/1_corinthians/15.htm.

NOTE: Speaking of good stuff, Cheez-It Chicken essentially consists of boneless chicken strips, first buttered and then battered in a concoction of ground up Cheez-It crackers, before being baked to perfection.  Recipes abound online.  If you’ve never done so, you really should try it.  After all, it is likely to be on the menu at the Marriage Supper of the Lamb!

THE OLD, OLD STORY…

4/3/2023

Down through the years, my wife and I have spent Holy Week engaged in a variety of activities.  Together, we have travelled at home and abroad; spent time with family; colored, hidden, and hunted Easter eggs; surprised our children with Easter Baskets; participated in musicals and Cantatas on Palm Sunday; attended special services of worship and/or undertaken Silent Communions on Spy Wednesday, Tenebrae services on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Black Saturday, as well Easter Sunrise Services and Easter Breakfasts; all before engaging in great celebrations of worship on Easter Sunday.

This year, however, we are doing something entirely new.  We are spending the week leading up to Easter binging!  No, we are not binge-watching some “here-today, gone-tomorrow” television show episode by episode.  Actually, we are fasting from regular television altogether.  Instead, we have decided to spend each night of Holy Week in the lead up to Easter watching a different classic Hollywood Biblical Epic.

Throughout the years, I have amassed a small collection of these on DVD.  While several dozen exist to choose from, we have selected only seven.  These, and the order we are watching them, are as follows:

Monday:  The Ten Commandments (1956, starring Charlton Heston).

Tuesday:  Ben Hur (1959, starring Charlton Heston).

Wednesday:  Jesus of Nazareth (1977, starring Robert Powell).

Thursday:  The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965, starring Max von Sydow).

Friday:  King of Kings (1961, starring Jeffrey Hunter).

Saturday:  Barabbas (1961, starring Anthony Quinn).

Sunday:  The Robe (1953, starring Victor Mature).

Granted, one would be hard pressed to prove it now; but there was a day and age when Hollywood once produced impressive, big budget epics that were fairly faithful to the Biblical narrative surrounding the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  If you have never seen these classics, I encourage you to check them out.

Of course, having viewed them, I then urge you to go a step further and read the actual Biblical passages they are based upon.  Be advised, however.  As is always the case, the book will most assuredly be far better than the movie!

NOTE:  As you plan your own television viewing, I recommend you consider doing so with the following proviso.  Several years ago, my wife hand-wrote a cardboard note and affixed it to the top of our living room television.  It was a quote from Psalm 101:3 that read:  “I will set no unclean thing before my eyes!” (Cf.: https://biblehub.com/psalms/101-3.htm.)

NOTE ALSO:  In Acts 17:11, we are told that the Bereans were more noble than the Thessalonians in that they listened to the Apostle Paul, and then checked the Scriptures to see if what he told them was accurate.  (Cf.: https://biblehub.com/acts/17-11.htm.)

In light of this Biblical principle, surely it behooves us to make certain that any secular interpretation and/or presentation of Biblical narratives we behold remains true to the core Biblical message.  Novels, short stories, plays, motion pictures, etc. are all works of fiction.  As such, of necessity, they incorporate poetic licence.  But it is entirely possible to do this and still remain faithful to the Biblical narrative.  It is also entirely possible to do this and NOT remain faithful to the biblical narrative.

A wise reader/viewer will therefore follow the example of the Bereans and check all such literary and/or film interpretations and presentations against the original Scriptural narratives themselves.
