STRONG SUIT!

7/6/2024

I found a recent article by famed “Cyber Guy” Kurt Knutsson on www.FoxNews.com quite intriguing.  Titled “AI-Driven Exoskeleton Lightens Your Load, Elevates Performance:  A Breakthrough In Wearable Robotics”, the article details how researchers have now created an Artificial Intelligence-powered exoskeleton that seamlessly adapts to provide remarkable mobility assistance and energy savings.

According to the article…

A groundbreaking AI-powered exoskeleton developed by researchers at North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill promises to be a game-changer for individuals with mobility issues….

The wearable technology provides unprecedented energy savings during human movement, making users feel as if they're carrying 26 pounds less. This results in significant improvements in athletic performance and daily life activities.

The secret behind this revolutionary exoskeleton lies in sophisticated digital twin simulations, where humans and machines coexist, learning and adapting through millions of iterations to perfect physical assistance. The exoskeleton's AI algorithm, still in development, goes beyond traditional machine learning focused on simulations and games, venturing into a new frontier where technology directly enhances human capabilities.

The researchers have embraced data-driven and physics-informed reinforcement learning, an approach that ensures their wearable robots are not just smart but also intuitive, aligning with their mission to improve human mobility and health. This cutting-edge technology maps sensor inputs from the robot to assistive torque without any intermediate steps, enabling end-to-end control.

One of the most remarkable features of this exoskeleton is its ability to generate synergistic assistance across various activities, including walking, running and stair-climbing. The learned controller automatically adapts to each user's different kinematic patterns, accommodating transitions between activities seamlessly without the need for handcrafted control.

The experimental results are nothing short of impressive. Among state-of-the-art portable exoskeletons, the exoskeleton achieved the greatest metabolic cost reduction for walking (24.3%), running (13.1%) and stair-climbing (15.4%). This remarkable achievement stems from the experiment-free and versatile control approach, which eliminates the need for lengthy human tests and handcrafted rules.

How much will the exoskeleton cost?  Presently, the price range is between $50,000 to $120,000 due to research and development costs.  But in time, the developers are aiming to make their exoskeletons for sale at a price range of $1,500 to $4,000, depending on specific features and manufacturing scale.

The author then goes on offer the following takeaways…

This AI-powered exoskeleton marks a major advancement in wearable robotics. It offers the rapid development and widespread adoption of assistive robots for both able-bodied and mobility-impaired individuals. This technology has the potential to revolutionize the field of exoskeletons, paving the way for a future where mobility is no longer a barrier and eliminates the hurdles of movement limitations.

Now, for my part, I’d love to have just such a suit.  It might well come in handy in my daily routine, especially on grass-cutting day.  But I’ll still have to wait for the $1500 version.  Otherwise, trust me, it ain’t happenin’!

Who among us could not benefit from an augmented physical suit?  Imagine being able to lift more, run faster, jump higher, and last longer!  The beauty of the concept is that it allows people to accomplish so much more than they otherwise could in their own strength.

Of course, if this is true in the physical realm, then consider how much more true is it in the spiritual realm! As I read this article, I thought about the Apostle Paul.

Over and over again, he stressed his own spiritual weakness.  More than once, he declared and stressed his own weaknesses to the Corinthian Christians (1 Corinthians 2:3; 2 Corinthians 12:5; 2 Corinthians 12:9).

And yet, he also said that he found power in Christ.  So much so that he declared in his New Testament Letter to the Philippians (chapter 4, verse 13) that he could do all things through Christ, Who gave him strength!

Later on, Paul gives us a fairly detailed description of the spiritual exoskeleton that is available to all who are followers of Christ Jesus.  In his New Testament Letter to the Ephesians, chapter 6, verses 10-18, he writes:

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.

In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

Any way you look at it, spiritually, that’s a strong suit!  And I, for one, will gladly don it each and every day of my life!
